If this is your first time here, welcome to Jedi, home of the Core Matrix Foundation. Jedi is located in Waterfall, Australia (bordering on the Royal National Park!), and it provides community-based dial-up internet connectivity along with related internet, networking and data sharing services to members of APANA Sydney. Please use this consise navigation menu to locate the information you're after:
If you are an existing APANA Sydney member, I've set up a seperate page covering all the config information you're ever likely to need in order to make the most of Jedi. The page is mostly Unix-oriented, but the information is just as relevant if you use a different type of operating environment.
- - General information about APANA Sydney,
- - A guide to the various different types of connection services provided for APANA Sydney members on Jedi,
- - A guide to the various different types of network services provided for APANA Sydney members on Jedi,
- - More information in case you are not currently an APANA member and you're interested in becoming one,
- - Links to APANA rules and policy documents.
The machines located here are part of the Sydney region of the Australian Public Access Network Association. Full details about applying for membership, fees for verious types of membership, and what membership entitles you to, are available from the Sydney region web site.
General Information about APANA Sydney
Membership of APANA Sydney is open to both individuals and non-profit organisations. Please note that any commercial use (as defined in the APANA Network Acceptable Use Policy) of the APANA Sydney network is expressly prohibited.
APANA Sydney's primary aim is to facilitate experimentation in computing and information technology (particularly networking). Jedi is a machine which all members of the Sydney region of APANA have access to - some directly, some via other Sydney region sites.
Please remember that APANA Sydney is not a commercial Internet service provider, and as such we can't provide the same diversity of services as the commercial providers offer (such as ultra-fast links, huge numbers of dial-in lines, etc.). We can, however, offer specialised services suited to the needs of individual or non-profit organisation members dependent on the resources we have available.
This section describes the connection services that are available to all APANA Sydney members using Jedi:
Internet Connectivity Services Provided on Jedi
Dial-in shell accounts:
- Dial-in shell accounts are the default connection service provided to all members. A shell account provides access to all of the utilities and applications available on any particular machine and on the Internet except for direct TCP/IP connections between your machine and the APANA Sydney network.
Remote access to your account via Secure Shell is also provided as standard (see below).
Dial-in PPP:
- Dial-in PPP (meaning Point to Point Protocol) is a connection service that allows you to connect your machine directly into the Sydney region network using TCP/IP, but only on an as-needed basis, to enable the use of a vast range of interactive networking facilities (such as the World-Wide Web, etc.).
Most of the member-access sites, including this one, provide dial-in PPP accessible directly from your shell account.
UUCP:
- As an alternative to dial-in shells and PPP, Jedi also offers UUCP services to members. UUCP (meaning Unix to Unix CoPy) allows your machine to become part of the APANA Sydney network without actually being connected up via a PPP link. UUCP is referred to as being a store and forward connection service because your machine calls into another site only on an as-needed basis, and the call is terminated immediately after all the queued mail and news has been transferred.
Please note that Jedi is the only member-access site in the APANA Sydney region which offers UUCP, and this service can be used both via the dial-in modems, and remotely from another site (on request).
Secure Shell, etc.:
- For remote online access, OpenSSH (a full open-source version of the original Secure Shell software from Tato Ylonen) is installed to provide secure, online connectivity should you need to access your account remotely. While this isn't strictly related to dial-in connections, it's universally available to all members using Jedi for incoming as well as outgoing connections.
If you wish to find out exactly which connection services are offered by the various public access sites in the Sydney region, take a look at the Sydney region web site. If you are interested in finding out about other regions, take a look at the regional information index available on the main APANA web site.
To complement the different types of connection service offered by this site to APANA Sydney members, an extensive array of network services are also provided (most without any additional cost over normal membership):
Networking and Data Sharing Services Provided on Jedi
Note 1: - These services are available to all members who apply for part-time dial-up membership.
- - Network services available to all APANA Sydney members without additional fee(s) (see note 1 below):
- - UNLIMITED downloads and UNLIMITED re-dialling to maximise accessibility and share resources,
- - Email hosting, along with POP and IMAP servers for remote access,
- - Usenet, Australian and local newsgroups via a local NNTP server,
- - local DNS (aka Domain Name Server) for resolving hostname lookups,
- - local WWW proxy server for handling WWW object fetching from web client applications such as Netscape, etc.,
- - HTTP server with PHP extensions for serving personal web pages and related material to other Internet users,
- - SQL server to create more dynamic websites with access to databases, etc.,
- - Secure Shell for making secure connections to remote sites,
- - Standard Unix network services like telnet, ftp, along with gcc, etc.
- - Network services which attract additional fee(s) (see note 2 below):
- - Additional dial-in accounts (to give additional email addresses),
- - Website hosting (mostly for non-profit organisations),
- - Domain hosting for email (normally used in conjunction with website hosting).
Note 2: - These services are available on application and attract additional fees.
If you are interested in becoming a member of APANA Sydney, I can set up a dial-in shell (and PPP) account on a trial basis for a period of one month. After this time the account will be deleted if you don't decide to join up, or it can become your permanent account if you do decide to join.
Would You Like More Information?
If you're already a member, I can set up a permanent account for you if Jedi is the closest physically-located Member-access site to you (or you'd just prefer to have your account hosted on Jedi anyway). Please send me some email to let me know how I can contact you to talk about your requirements.
If you are interested in becoming a member with a full-time PPP link, or you are already a member and you'd like to set up a full-time link, please email the Regional Committee so someone can contact you and start making the necessary arrangements. Since full-time links are set up between the Sydney region hub site and your machine, they're not handled directly by me.
